Anuradha Mittal, international food and economic policy expert, presents Oakland Institute's new report "(Mis)Investment in Agriculture: The Role of the International Finance Corporation in the Global Land Grab".

Land grabs have transferred nearly 50 million hectares of farmland in poor, developing countries to wealthier nations and private investors. Rising food prices, demand for biofuels, and investors seeking quick returns are cited as the principal drivers of this activity, ignoring the key role of the World Bank private lending arm, International Finance Corporation (IFC). The results undermine independent small farmers in economically vulnerable countries and increase hunger. Mittal's talk will also address how to combat these takeovers.
